White Villages Route: A Journey from Jerez

Zahara de la Sierra and its turquoise reservoir

Beyond the coast and the countryside, the heart of the province of Cádiz beats in the mountains, in its famous White Villages (Pueblos Blancos). A labyrinth of whitewashed streets, perched on mountains and dotted with flowers, that transport you to another era.

From Jerez, you have the gateway to this wonderful route. It is the perfect day trip to combine with your stay in the city, and upon your return, the comfort and rest of your apartment at Familia Antonio Parra will be waiting for you.

A One-Day Route: 3 Essential Villages

The White Villages Route is extensive, but we have designed a perfect circular itinerary for one day, visiting three of the most representative ones.

Stop 1: Arcos de la Frontera (The Gateway)

Arcos de la Frontera from the cliff

Your adventure begins in Arcos, one of the most spectacular villages in Spain, perched on a massive cliff. It is the gateway to the Sierra de Cádiz.

What you can't miss: Leave your car in the lower part and walk up through its steep and narrow streets to the Plaza del Cabildo. Look out from the Balcón de la Peña Nueva (watch out if you have a fear of heights!) and enjoy a panoramic view that will take your breath away.

Stop 2: Grazalema (The Heart of the Natural Park)

White village of Grazalema in the Sierra de Cádiz

We continue inland to reach Grazalema, nestled in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. Curiously, it is one of the rainiest spots in Spain, which explains its incredible greenery.

What to do: Stroll through its charming Plaza de España and look for the craft shops selling the famous Grazalema wool blankets. It is the ideal place for lunch in one of its traditional local restaurants (mesones).

Stop 3: Zahara de la Sierra (The Perfect Postcard)

Views of Zahara de la Sierra and its Nasrid castle

To end the day, the crown jewel. The image of Zahara de la Sierra, with its Nasrid castle at the top and the turquoise reservoir at its feet, is one of the most famous postcards of Andalusia.

The perfect plan: Climb up to the Torre del Homenaje (Keep) of the castle. The effort of the climb is rewarded with views that are, quite simply, unforgettable. It is the perfect finishing touch for your route.

Practical Tips for Your Route

  • Car essential: This route is designed to be done by car to enjoy the scenery between the villages.
  • Comfortable footwear: Cobbled streets and steep hills await you. Leave your heels back at the apartment!
  • Plan your meal: Especially on weekends, it is a good idea to book a table at a restaurant in Grazalema or Zahara to ensure you have a spot.

Returning to Jerez at sunset, after a day exploring the mountains, is a wonderful feeling. The comfort of the city and the rest you need to keep enjoying your trip await you.
