🐎 The Jerez Horse Fair: A Fascinating Journey Since the 13th Century

Jerez Horse Fair Poster

The Jerez Horse Fair (Feria del Caballo) didn't start with lanterns or "rebujito"; it was born from the pragmatism of medieval business. It is one of the oldest festivals in Spain, and its evolution from a livestock market to being declared of International Tourist Interest is a fascinating journey. From the Antonio Parra Family, we invite you to discover the soul of a celebration that is pure Jerez essence.

📜 Chronicle of a Tradition: From the Middle Ages to the "Real"

Old Jerez Horse Fair

1. Medieval Origin (13th Century): It all started with a royal privilege. After the reconquest in 1264, King Alfonso X the Wise granted Jerez the concession of two annual fairs to encourage trade. Merchants enjoyed a "safe-conduct" to boost attendance.

2. Foreign Merchants (15th - 17th Centuries): By the 15th century, the fair was already international, with merchants from Flanders and England. It was held within the city walls, where neighbors were legally required to light their doors to provide security for the venue.

3. The 19th Century and the Move to the "Real": The fair moved through various locations until 1876, when it reached Cañada de Caulina. This was a historic site where Jerez enjoyed electric lighting for the first time, a technological milestone for the era.

4. Consolidation in the 20th Century: In 1903, the González Hontoria Park was inaugurated. In 1966, the events were unified under the name "Horse Fair," with the Carthusian Horse as its flagship symbol.

🍷 A Taste of the Fair: Gastronomy with Heritage

Eating at the Fair is a ritual of togetherness. Since almost all "casetas" (tents) are public and open, any visitor can enjoy the culinary identity that has led us to be named the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2026.

Tapas and wine at the Jerez Fair

🍷 The Perfect Match: Fino Wine and Rebujito are the undisputed kings to refresh the midday heat on the "albero" (golden sand).

🍲 The Essentials: Fried fish, Iberian ham, and traditional stews like Berza Jerezana or oxtail.

✨ Highlights That Make It Unique in the World
